This is not merely something printed on top. The black form has been taken off — the deity of Christ is denied — and a forgery is mounted on the press: made to resemble the original, but not it. What comes off the sheet is no longer the same image.

PRACTICE-BASED READING

What actually comes off the press

The black form is nearly off: the biblical doctrine of God has been replaced. A forgery is printed on top — extra scriptures, another God, a “restored” priesthood and temple steps of salvation. This is no longer a distorted Christ, but a different system.

This is no longer a question of ink density. Once the biblical doctrine of God is denied, what comes off the press is not a distorted image, but a forgery.

THE TRADITION TEACHES

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes as the Word of God not only the Bible, but also the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. The Bible is accepted as the Word of God with a caveat: “as far as it is translated correctly.”

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Galatians 1:8–9Even if an angel should bring another gospel, it must be rejected.
Jude 3The faith was “once for all delivered to the saints.”
2 Timothy 3:16–17God-breathed Scripture is able to fully equip the man of God.

Gospel truth

The apostolic gospel did not need to be restored through a new nineteenth-century book.

No later “revelation” can rewrite the gospel already given by the apostles.

The biblical doctrine of God is changed

THE TRADITION TEACHES

Father, Son and Holy Spirit are understood as three separate beings, united in purpose. The Father, according to their teaching, has a glorified physical body of “flesh and bones.”

Gospel truth

Scripture does not describe God as a council of three separate godlike beings with a body of flesh and bones.

The Bible reveals one eternal God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not a union of three separate godlike beings.

Man is promised to become a god

THE TRADITION TEACHES

Their official teaching of “exaltation” says a person can become like God; their own materials use the language that the exalted will be “gods.”

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Isaiah 43:10“Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.”
Isaiah 44:8“Is there a God besides Me? There is no other Rock.”
1 Corinthians 8:4“There is no God but one.”
2 Peter 1:4It speaks of believers sharing in the divine nature, but not of people becoming separate gods.

Gospel truth

The saved person will be glorified and conformed to Christ, but the creature never becomes God in essence.

God is one. We are His children and His creatures, not gods in waiting.

Christ placed in one class of beings with Lucifer

THE TRADITION TEACHES

In their teaching of premortal existence Jesus is called the Firstborn of the Father’s spirit children, and Lucifer another spirit son of God who rebelled against God’s plan.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

John 1:1–3Christ is the eternal Word, and everything created came into being through Him.
Colossians 1:16–17By Him all things were created, visible and invisible.
Hebrews 1:5–8The Son is set over against the angels and is called God.

Gospel truth

Christ and Satan do not belong to one class of spirit children.

Christ is the eternal Creator. Satan is a created fallen being.

The Creator and the creature are not brothers by nature.

The apostolic Church declared to have vanished

THE TRADITION TEACHES

After the apostles’ death a “Great Apostasy” supposedly occurred: the true Church and priesthood authority disappeared from the earth and were restored only through Joseph Smith in the nineteenth century.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Matthew 16:18Christ says: “I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 28:20“I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Ephesians 3:21To God be glory in the Church “throughout all generations, forever and ever.”

Gospel truth

Christ did not lose His Church for 1,800 years.

If the Church vanished completely, Christ’s promise that the gates of hell would not prevail against it would have failed.

Joseph Smith made a necessary “restorer” of the gospel

Through Joseph Smith the fulness of the gospel, the true Church, prophetic leadership and lost priesthood authority were supposedly restored.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Hebrews 1:1–2God’s final revelation is concentrated in Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:11“No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 1:8Even an angelic revelation is tested by the gospel already given.

Gospel truth

The Church does not need a second founder eighteen centuries after Christ.

The foundation is already laid: Christ and the apostolic witness to Him.

Salvation supplemented with a required system of temple ordinances

THE TRADITION TEACHES

For the fulness of “salvation and exaltation” certain covenants and ordinances are necessary, including temple endowment; for men, receiving the Melchizedek priesthood is also significant.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Ephesians 2:8–9Salvation is by grace through faith, not of works.
Romans 5:1“Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God.”
Hebrews 10:14Christ “by one offering has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”
John 5:24The believer already has eternal life.

Gospel truth

Christ did not leave salvation unfinished so that Joseph Smith, eighteen centuries later, could add required temple steps.

The ground of salvation is the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Temple marriage made necessary for highest exaltation

“Eternal” or temple marriage is considered necessary to receive the highest degree of exaltation.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Matthew 22:30In the resurrection they “neither marry nor are given in marriage.”
1 Corinthians 7:7–8, 32–35Singleness is fully compatible with undivided service to God.
1 Corinthians 7:39The earthly marriage bond lasts “as long as her husband lives.”

Gospel truth

The New Testament nowhere makes temple marriage a condition of the highest degree of salvation.

Our eternal standing is determined by union with Christ, not by a special marriage ordinance.

Baptism for the dead is performed

THE TRADITION TEACHES

In temples living people are baptized on behalf of the dead so that those who have died may accept the ordinance after death. This practice exists today.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

1 Corinthians 15:29 mentions people who were baptized for the dead, but Paul does not establish the custom as a church command and gives no instructions to practise it.

Hebrews 9:27“It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”
2 Corinthians 6:2“Now is the favorable time; now is the day of salvation.”
Luke 16:26After death an unbridgeable gulf is shown between the states of people.

Gospel truth

The New Testament nowhere commissions the Church to baptize the living in place of the dead.

A person answers to God for his own faith and his own response to Christ.

Living prophets and new revelation receive standing doctrinal authority

THE TRADITION TEACHES

After Joseph Smith a line of modern prophets and apostles continues, through whom God, according to their faith, continues to give guidance and revelation to the Church.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS

Acts 17:11Every teaching is tested by the Scriptures.
1 Thessalonians 5:20–21Prophecies must be tested.
1 John 4:1“Test the spirits, whether they are of God.”
Galatians 1:8No new revelation can change the apostolic gospel.

Gospel truth

God still acts and speaks to His Church, but no later prophecy can create a new gospel, a new God, new saving ordinances, or a new scripture that corrects the apostolic faith.

Every prophecy is tested by the gospel already given by the apostles, not the other way around.

The main departure

Mormonism does not merely add a few unusual church practices.

It creates another theological system:

another understanding of God → another understanding of Christ → extra scriptures → a new restoring prophet → a new priesthood → new temple ordinances → a new scheme of human exaltation.

The apostolic faith is far simpler:

one God; one Lord Jesus Christ — the eternal Creator and Saviour; one gospel; the faith once delivered to the saints; one sacrifice of Christ, offered once for all; salvation by grace through faith; a Church that Christ neither left nor lost.

Gospel truth is defined not by a nineteenth-century prophet, but by the apostolic witness of the New Testament.

Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.Galatians 1:8

How it differs from the apostolic church

One gospel already preached

Peter preaches Jesus as Lord and Christ, and ‘there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ Acts does not wait for a second founder and a new book.

Acts 2:36 · 4:12

God is not a man with a body of bones

Paul tells the Athenians that the God who made the world does not live in temples made by hands and is not served as a being in need. We are His offspring, but not gods beside Him.

Acts 17:24–29

The Church did not vanish

Christ purchased the Church with His own blood and set overseers in it. Paul warns of wolves, but not of the flock vanishing from the earth for 1,800 years.

Acts 20:28–32

Salvation by faith, without temple steps

The Jerusalem council refuses to lay on believers a burden beyond what is necessary. The jailer is told: ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.’ A nineteenth-century temple endowment is not required.
